Meet SAM
Procedural sedation is the fastest-growing and least-protected segment of anesthesia care, often referred to
as MAC, or Monitored Anesthesia Care. Some procedures may carry lower procedural risk, but the risk of anesthesia remains high — and it is being delivered to older and sicker patients than ever before.
Under MAC, there is no airway-protective endotracheal tube, and the pharyngeal muscle tone that holds the airway open is diminished. Obstruction, desaturation, and the constant manual work of holding a jaw forward have been accepted as the cost of doing business, leaving providers to manage by hand what an endotracheal tube would otherwise hold open.
SAM (the Stable Airway Management device) was built for that gap. It gently keeps a patient’s head and
neck in the sniffing position throughout the procedure, thereby maintaining airway positioning to facilitate
breathing and reducing the risk of obstruction and subsequent oxygen desaturation during sedation.
